The day flew after Daniel and Charlie had left Cassandra Salinas. Daniel had asked Rachel over for a meal at his flat. She brought the wine, and over some overcooked beef and a delicious but very rich cheesecake he picked his friendâs brain as best he could. It was her last night in London and he couldnât miss the opportunity.
Rachel Callahan had always been his sanity-check, his barometer for normality. Once again he wished she was still his colleague as well as his friend. Charlie was proving to be a great partner and budding friend, but Rachel had a gift for the logical, the practical, that Daniel felt he sometimes lacked.
She waited patiently while he filled her in on the details of both cases that he was allowed to share, topping up their drinks as he spoke.
Amelia Harding and a crime scene team had gone back to the Morris house and searched for any evidence of hydrofluoric acid. They found nothing. They had also looked for signs that anything in the house had been tampered with, anything that could have resulted in Darrell Morris coming into contact with the acid, either deliberately or accidentally. Again, they found nothing. Amelia had been tasked with looking into the pasts of Catherine Delamar and Marcus Spindler the next day, with help from another officer. They needed more dirt on the duo if they were going to rule out the poisoning being a freak accident.
The body of Darrell Morris had undergone a second post-mortem by another coroner. She had said that Samson Lepard was probably correct in thinking that the victim had ingested acid, but she was less certain of the type. She had found no other injuries though either, which got them no further along.
The sergeant monitoring Janine Morris had stayed in the hospital all day, waiting for any developments, but Janineâs nurse said that she was still not fit to make any statement. She was simply not mentally sound enough. She was also being regularly sedated as a precaution against her hurting herself or anyone else.
âHave you spoken to any experts on the subject?â Rachel had asked as she mulled over having another slice of dessert.
âNo, why would I? We know weâre not dealing with the supernatural.â
âProcess of elimination. To rule it out.â
âI donât need to rule it out, Rach, itâs nonsense. Iâm not in some cheesy exorcism film where the cop seeks out a guru only to find out it was true all along,â Daniel had answered, irritated. He had been surprised she had even entertained the option. It was not what he expected from her.
âWell, look what youâre dealing with. You have basically no evidence pointing to the demonologist woman or her colleague, the coroner can only be ninety-five per cent sure how the victim was murdered, and the press are already having a field day. Of course, most of the general public is unlikely to believe in demons, but they are normally also far less vocal than the ones who do believe in stuff like this.
